Switching to C0 DWR – What You Need to Know

As the textile industry shifts toward safer and more sustainable materials, manufacturers and product teams are increasingly exploring what has become known in the textile industry as "C0" DWR (PFAS-free chemistry). When exploring alternatives to traditional C6 finishes, understanding how C0 works, its advantages, and disadvantages can help you make the best choice for your products.

What Is C0 DWR?

C0 DWR is a PFAS‑free, non‑fluorinated water‑repellent finish. Instead of relying on fluorinated chemistry like C6, C0 uses hydrocarbon-based chemistry to help water bead and roll off a fabric’s surface. This allows water repellency without the environmental concerns and regulatory pressures associated with PFAS-containing finishes.

Why More Brands Are Switching

A Move Toward PFAS-Free Solutions
C6 DWR has long been known for strong performance, especially water and oil repellency. But because it contains PFAS, more brands are moving away from it to stay ahead of evolving regulations and customer expectations. C0 DWR eliminates fluorinated compounds, offering a cleaner alternative.

Reduced Environmental Impact
C0 finishes are considered more environmentally responsible. They avoid PFAS altogether and support long-term sustainability initiatives that many brands are prioritizing.

How C0 Compares to C6

Water Repellency:
C6 offers excellent water repellency, but C0 still performs well for many end uses. For applications that need water beading but not for extreme conditions, C0 is often more than sufficient.

Oil/Stain Resistance:
This is the biggest difference. C6 offers moderate oil repellency, while C0 provides limited or no oil protection. If your product regularly comes into contact with oils, lotions, or heavy abrasion, this is an important consideration.

Durability:
Both finishes can wear down with time, washing, and use - though C0 may need reapplication sooner, depending on the product and environment.

Sustainability:
C6 contains PFAS; C0 is completely PFAS-free. For brands prioritizing environmental responsibility or preparing for stricter chemical regulations, this distinction is key.

When C0 Is the Right Fit

C0 DWR is a great match for products where:

  • Water repellency is needed
  • Oil repellency is not critical
  • Sustainability matters to the end user
  • Moderate wear and wash durability is acceptable

This makes C0 a strong candidate for outdoor apparel, lifestyle products, bags, and many commercial textile applications.

Considering Alternatives

If you’re looking for PFAS-free performance that matches or exceeds C6 in certain areas, next‑generation technologies like Empel® offer a compelling option. These advanced finishes provide strong water repellency, improved durability, and a completely fluorine-free chemistry — giving brands a way to achieve high performance without PFAS.

Switching to C0 DWR is both a performance and a sustainability decision. While it may not match every aspect of C6, especially in oil repellency, it offers a safer, responsible, and forward‑looking solution for many textile applications. As the industry continues transitioning away from fluorinated chemistries, now is the right time to evaluate where C0 fits into your product line or whether an alternative like Empel makes sense.

We’re currently offering C0 DWR and Empel coatings on our SAM Stretch Woven fabrics, and C0 on select other stock fabrics. As the industry evolves, we'll stay tuned to what’s next - so we can continue delivering the fabrics our customers rely on.
