Camouflage Fabric History

Today, camouflage uniforms are worn by all soldiers in the military. Yet, many armies prior to 1915 wore very colorful uniforms.  The French Army developed the first unit dedicated to camouflage.  Artists were enlisted to help design camouflage.  In 1942 the US Army began camouflage development.

Camouflage is an important part of the modern Army. It is a tool that breaks up the soldier’s recognizable   human form. This blending into the environment enables the solider to spot the enemy first.

Military camouflage has changed over the years due to the change in terrain and camouflage science.“There is the khaki and green of WWII the olive drab of Korea and Vietnam; the woodland color of the Cold War and Balkans; the 'chocolate chip' pattern of the Gulf War; the desert pattern of Afghanistan and Iraq; and the grey pixel pattern of today.”

Soldiers aren’t the only ones using camouflage fabrics.  Hunting camouflage was developed in the late 1970’s.  Jim Crumley used a Magic Marker on brown dyed work clothes to create a tree bark pattern.  Hunting camouflage serves a similar purpose to military camouflage. It allows the hunter to spot the target before they are spotted.

Camouflage has proven to be a very useful tool.  We here at MMI Textiles are encouraged by the advances made in camouflage science as it helps to keep our military safe. We would also like to thank all that have served to protect our freedom.
