How It's Made: The American Flag

by Annie 20. April 2016 11:10

Have you wondered how American Flags are made? What they are made out of? The history of this symbol is rich and stitches between the red, white, and blue fabric are made out of more than just fabric. The fabric that an American Flag is made out of, like most things in American history, has changed throughout time. Since MMI Textiles, Inc. is  proud to sell many products are made right here in the USA, it got us thinking about the flag and how it is changed over time and thought you might be wondering the same thing.

Since 1776, the flag has been made from different things. In the early years, American flags were made out of wool, cotton, linen, or silk depending on where it was being made within the country. Goods and materials didn’t travel anywhere near as fast as they do today so therefore, the kind of fabric that was already close by was probably the fabric used. As one could imagine, flags made from silk were typically more expensive and used in the military and for special occasions, sometimes related to occasions involving the federal government. In 1865, laws were put into place that allowed the federal government only purchase flag materials from American manufacturer. We can see a lot of similar things and laws in place now related to buying USA produced good and materials that are Berry compliant.

Today, while the fabric has changed, an American flag is usually manufactured with a material that depends on where it will be flown. Flag manufacturers are always looking to use improved fabric that offers outdoor flags better wearability and better resistance to sunlight and weathering. Indoor flags, decorative flags, and ones that won’t be exposed to too much weathering will be made out of softer fabrics like cottons. The ones for outdoor uses are typically made from nylon or polyester. Nylon, which is typically a little bit lighter than polyester, waves in the wind as one might think a flag should wave.

As new fabrics, smart fabrics, and other materials are introduced to the fabric industry, chances are that the flag will continue to evolve. The stars and stripe will continue to mean more than just the fabric that is sewn together and now you know just a little more about it!

3 Proven Ways to Get the Fabric You're Looking For

by Annie 24. February 2016 09:30

We have seen it all when it comes to trying to source and buy fabric for projects. Whether it is a tactical project, a commercial project, a medical project, or something totally different – we can help. It can be overwhelming and sometimes just plain exhausting to spend time trying to find exactly what you need and we want to avoid that at all costs. Our fabric experts have heard all the questions and in most cases found all the answers so I asked around and found out the best tips they have for someone who is trying to find the best fabric for their project.

Be specific.

If you know exactly what color, kind, and weight of the fabric you need then let whoever you are working with know. It can make the process much quicker if you cut to chase and give the nitty gritty details of the fabric you need. If you aren’t sure, that’s okay, too! You can still be specific by describing the project you need the fabric, hardware, or other component for. It’s also important to know if there is any special qualities like fire resistance or berry compliancy that you need the fabric to be.

Ask for samples.

Our office is filled with samples. They are literally everywhere. And we have them so that we can send them out to people just like you who are looking to find something that works. Our team is extra experienced at getting fabrics out quickly and then following up with you. So if you let us know something you are interested in seeing and feeling than we can get it to you ASAP! After you get the samples…

Ask questions.

Yep, ask away. It’s better for all parties involved if you ask questions about everything. You can see our most frequently asked questions, right here. Lead times, costs, and where it is coming from are all important things that you deserve to know. Any question that provides value to you if worth asking and we want to make sure we cover all our bases. Call as many times as you need and keep in mind that you making sure you are as knowledgeable about the process as you want to be if the focus. Whether it’s email or phone calls, ask as many questions as you want.

After doing these three things, it’s up to whoever you are communicating with to do the rest. Once we get all the necessary information, we can conduct our most thorough search to find the product you want. When dealing with MMI, things are a little easier because we have a lot of stock options and an incredible network of sources that we can contact to get the right thing. Our 19 years of experience comes in handy. If you are new to the textile world, then welcome and I hope these tips are helpful! On the contrary, if are seasoned in the industry then I hope these are a good reminder. Our MMI team is standing by help, so as usual feel free to call at 440.899.8050 or shoot us an email at info@mmitextiles.com

IFAI Round UP

by MMI Textiles 16. November 2012 16:57

It was another great year at IFAI. We were really excited to celebrate all that is new at MMI Textiles with everyone at the show. We greeted attendees in our brand new booth. Check out the picture below. You will notice we also have an updated logo. The most exciting update of all is our newly designed website. The website is designed to help visitors quickly and easily find information on the products and services we offer.

As we celebrated the future at the MMI Textiles booth we also took time to honor the past 100 years of IFAI. The 100th Year Celebration Party was a tribute to an industry that has made innovations that have had impact of the lives of many. Our president, Amy Hammond along with Bob Rosania from Ehmke Manufacturing took time to thank all of the sponsors and lead the room in a Happy Birthday sing-a-long.

Not only did show attendees have the opportunity to celebrate they could also give back. The Industrial Fabrics Foundation’s fall fund raiser took place on November 6, 2012. The first ever IFF Indy Fund Raiser at F1 Boston gave participants a chance to drive on a professional indoor kart racing track. Over $17,000 were raised for IFF scholarships and industry research.

Another first at the IFAI 2012 was the Show Stopper Awards. Awards are given to best products from the show exhibitors. We entered our 1000D Perforated Nylon fabric. Although we did not win we were pleased to received positive feedback about the product.

Thanks to everyone who stopped by our booth. We enjoyed greeting friends both new and old. We will see you next year in Orlando!
