What It Means to be Made in the USA

by Annie 9. August 2016 09:50

We’ve been watching the Olympics non-stop over here at MMI. Gymnastics, swimming, archery, table tennis, you name it and we’re practically “experts”. It’s such a great time every four years and we’re grateful for how it brings us together within the office, not even to mention how it brings us together with the rest of the globe. We love cheering on our home red, white, and blue and it definitely has us thinking about what it means to be “Made in the USA”.

MMI Textiles offers a lot of different products that are “Made in the USA”. Depending on what it is and the kinds of specifications that it needs to have, we often refer to it as domestic or if it’s a military fabric or component, we may refer to it as Berry compliant – which you can read more about here.

Manufacturing goods that are Made in the USA means more than what it might look like on paper. For us – it means we are staying true to our history and staying true to the industry that helped MMI become what it is today. Our history reaches back all the way to 1932 when National Dye Works was started in downtown Chicago, and continued through 1980 when it was first purchased by the Bircher family, and then in 2007 when it was purchased by MMI Textiles, Inc. A long history – traveling through Chicago, IL, Lynchburg, SC, reaching through the Midwest, and now headquartered in Cleveland, OH with ties throughout the entire country.

We manufacturer, convert, and distribute goods based on customer needs and many times that need is wanting goods Made in the USA for the same reasons that we like offering them. We are proud of the fact that we can help support jobs and supporting businesses that are growing within the United States, just like our customers and partners support our growing business.

It's for those reasons that we love to talk about how many things we can offer that are made right here in the United States. In case you were immediately curious, here's a brief list of some of our fabrics and components that can be made within the USA:

It is also important to note that if you are thinking about bringing any kind of production back to the USA, starting new production in the USA, or trying to figure out if it’s even possible – we’d love to help. We’re waving our flags high as we cheer on our team in Rio, hoping to carry that momentum in many more corners of our country.

*It's important to note that Berry Compliancy is different from something being "Made in the USA" - here's something to read on the Berry Amendment and this is what it takes for something to be considered Made in the USA

Why We Love Hook and Loop (And You Should, Too!)

by Annie 9. March 2016 08:42

You may or may not know that a lot of people consider MMI Textiles, Inc. a one-stop shop. We can provide our customers with just about everything they need when making products. Whether it’s woven fabric, hardware, or hook and loop. Speaking on hook and loop specifically, we have numerous great options. We love this stuff, no lie. Hook and loop fastener has been around since 1941 and was developed to stick together much like the burrs of burdock that stick to clothing. One of the biggest pros of hook and loop is the fact that it is easy to use and because of that it can be used in so many different applications. MMI keeps a lot of it in stock, too so chances are we can get it to you quickly. Our lines are both import and domestically produced and we also offer VELCRO® Brand for our military customers and berry compliant needs.

We have hook and loop experts who deal with this stuff daily. So we can break down all the hook and loop fabric options for you. Let’s start with our product categories:

We’re extra proud of our line of military hook and loop. Of course, it’s made in the USA and it will be distributed out of our Ohio warehouse along with our other stock products. We offer this hook and loop in coyote brown, ranger green, black, and on a limited basis we also offer foliage green and wolf gray!

The minimum order for stock products is just one case each of hook and loop – case sizes do vary depending on product and width. We specialize in creating stock programs tailored to individual customer needs to ensure we are able to react to increased needs as our customers grow their business.

We’d love to answer all the questions you have to about hook and loop and help you lay out all of your options. Give us a call to discuss at 440.899.8050 or email us at info@mmitextiles.com with some info and we’ll start gathering all the information we need. MMI is focused on the customer is everything we do and it certainly is true when it comes to hook and loop.

3 Proven Ways to Get the Fabric You're Looking For

by Annie 24. February 2016 09:30

We have seen it all when it comes to trying to source and buy fabric for projects. Whether it is a tactical project, a commercial project, a medical project, or something totally different – we can help. It can be overwhelming and sometimes just plain exhausting to spend time trying to find exactly what you need and we want to avoid that at all costs. Our fabric experts have heard all the questions and in most cases found all the answers so I asked around and found out the best tips they have for someone who is trying to find the best fabric for their project.

Be specific.

If you know exactly what color, kind, and weight of the fabric you need then let whoever you are working with know. It can make the process much quicker if you cut to chase and give the nitty gritty details of the fabric you need. If you aren’t sure, that’s okay, too! You can still be specific by describing the project you need the fabric, hardware, or other component for. It’s also important to know if there is any special qualities like fire resistance or berry compliancy that you need the fabric to be.

Ask for samples.

Our office is filled with samples. They are literally everywhere. And we have them so that we can send them out to people just like you who are looking to find something that works. Our team is extra experienced at getting fabrics out quickly and then following up with you. So if you let us know something you are interested in seeing and feeling than we can get it to you ASAP! After you get the samples…

Ask questions.

Yep, ask away. It’s better for all parties involved if you ask questions about everything. You can see our most frequently asked questions, right here. Lead times, costs, and where it is coming from are all important things that you deserve to know. Any question that provides value to you if worth asking and we want to make sure we cover all our bases. Call as many times as you need and keep in mind that you making sure you are as knowledgeable about the process as you want to be if the focus. Whether it’s email or phone calls, ask as many questions as you want.

After doing these three things, it’s up to whoever you are communicating with to do the rest. Once we get all the necessary information, we can conduct our most thorough search to find the product you want. When dealing with MMI, things are a little easier because we have a lot of stock options and an incredible network of sources that we can contact to get the right thing. Our 19 years of experience comes in handy. If you are new to the textile world, then welcome and I hope these tips are helpful! On the contrary, if are seasoned in the industry then I hope these are a good reminder. Our MMI team is standing by help, so as usual feel free to call at 440.899.8050 or shoot us an email at info@mmitextiles.com

The 2 Different Kinds of Labels and Why You Need to Know the Difference

by Annie 18. November 2015 09:56

Labels are like snowflakes and sadly, in Cleveland we know too much about snowflakes. But back to the point, we don’t think that any two labels are the alike. They come in so many colors, different materials, shapes, and sizes that it can be hard to pick out the kind you want and need. Let’s break down the options to help make this process simpler.

Printed

We can get you printed labels that are both domestic and imported. We have stock on standard size, Made in the USA, and care labels for immediate delivery.

Custom labels can be produced in 3 to 4 weeks and we can even create a stock program for your custom labels which helps with any problems that you may have with getting them as soon as possible!

We can also print on ribbons, elastics, webbing, and on virtually any material – natural or man made such as cotton, poly-cotton, vinyl, webbing, canvas, and more!

And because we love to stay attuned to what our customers want we are now offering labels printed on organic cotton!

Woven

MMI imports its woven labels from South America and our factory has one of the most prestigious plants and operates on state-of-the-art equipment to weave labels from the best fabrics. We do have minimums and the lead time for these is usually 2 to 3 weeks. Some of our special effects include:

  • Embossing
  • Laser cutting
  • 3D
  • Reflective
  • Pressure Sensitive (sticky backed)

Note that there are minimums and details that go along with this but if you are interested, we would love to fill you in on the details and figure out how to make it work for you.

The process usually includes sending an art file with graphics and dimensions and we will figure out what the label will be put on and any other special requirements so that we can get you exactly what you need!

As always if you need labels of any kind or you have any questions, give our team a call at 440.899.8050!

4.       Are we able to spread out shipments on custom fabrics?
